The Castle Key Presents

Mia Nicholson Trio
Saturday May 24th in the Castle Key Dining Room
8:00 to 11:00 p.m.
Cover charge: $15.00

Jazz vocalist Mia Nicholson sings with a sincerity that catches listeners off guard — and leaves them thoroughly enchanted.

A professional writer as well as a singer, Mia values lyrics as much as music. That’s why she loves the songs of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s — an era of musical excellence and intelligence when, she says, “the quality of the lyrics was equal to the quality of the compositions.” But she’s not a revivalist. Mixing reverence with an equal measure of modern sensibility, Mia delivers her tastefully chosen songbook with such freshness and insight it would be easy to believe these tunes were recently written just for her. Winsome yet sophisticated, Mia combines her uncontrived sound with a polished presence that invites audiences to appreciate the meaning of each phrase.

Mia’s repertoire features works by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Rogers and Hart, Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, David Frishberg, and Antonio Carlos Jobim plus more unexpected fare by the likes of Paul Simon, Burt Bacharach and Gillian Welch. In summer of 2003, she launched the Portland Classical Chinese Garden’s premiere concert series with a sold-out performance. In February of 2004, she was selected to sing at the Portland Jazz Festival and later that year traveled to Suzhou, China on behalf of the City of Portland to perform with Steve Christofferson at an international festival. Most recently, Mia released “Something to Live For,” her debut CD arranged and co-produced by Christofferson. Learn more about Mia at www.mianicholson.com
